      <image:title>Blog - A visual history of the process</image:title>
<image:caption>One of the things that interest me in painting is how it’s a visual record of time transferred to a surface. From the time the artist starts thinking about a painting, every decision has an effect on the finished painting. I may know the general direction a painting will go before I start, or perhaps I know what materials I’ll be using, or maybe a specific color, but the end result can only be achieved through the process and through time. Spur-of-the-moment decisions in front of the easel can have lasting effects on the final painting. Marks are made through the use of paint, tools, and even screwdrivers or wire fencing. Layers get added that might erase these marks or might make them stand out even more. Each painting becomes a visual history of these processes - told through layers, marks, and time. I sometimes wonder if I had worked on a painting on a different day, would that painting have been different? If my day had gone differently would that have affected my choices in front of the canvas?</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Exploring potential - Processes and mediums</image:title>
<image:caption>New art supplies are one of my favorite things. Art supplies for me may not be just a new paint color, they could include wire, rocks, rusted metal, specialty papers… The list goes on. Finding something new and unusual might inspire a whole new series of paintings. My current(as of this writing) artist statement’s second line is: Exploring the potential of processes and mediums drives the painting forward. The art materials listed above fall under the “mediums” portion of the statement. The “processes” portion is a multiple-part definition. If the start of a painting begins with a question, the process is what gets me through the messy middle part. The first part of what falls under “processes” would be the ways in which I’ve developed to build my paintings. From the very substrate, whether it’s wood, canvas, linen, or even a cardboard box, to the finishing touches I’ve developed processes to move the painting toward the finish. This includes building multiple layers over time. Applying and then removing paint. Language, text, and lines scored into the surface. These are time-tested ways that I build the layers of paintings. Things that I know will move the painting to a more complete stage. The second part of “processes” is the rules I might apply to the painting. Something as simple as not using solvents, or that the painting must include specific elements. These constraints, instead of limiting a painting, help move it along by providing focus. Some of these arbitrary rules may be something I do with every painting(such as not using solvents). But other rules might be specific to a particular painting or series of paintings. Process artists have a lot of interesting work, and while I’m not strictly a process artist, I’m very inspired by it. I don’t have a finished destination in mind when I start a painting, so these processes are what defines much of how my paintings will develop and what the end result will be.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - What is a Painting? - In Defiance</image:title>
<image:caption>The question “What is a painting” is interesting to me. When we think of a “painting” we often have a specific idea in our heads. Square or rectangle, flat, often on stretched canvas or linen. Depending on our preferences and favorite artists, we might think of the Mona Lisa, or of a Rothko. Asking this question can have a playful aspect for both the artist as they create new work, but also the viewer as they are asked to view a work that falls outside of the usual. The first line in my Artist Statement talks about how I begin a painting. It says “ A painting begins with the questioning of the boundaries of the painted surface”. How a painting begins for me is with a question of what a painting is, and what can it be. An example of a broader question I’m interested in is “When is it a painting and when is it a sculpture?” A more specific question regarding this is: What would a cube or box painting be? Would it still be a painting? How far could it delve into 3 dimensions before it’s something else, an object? A sculpture? For me, a question such as this might not only be the catalyst for a painting but even a series of paintings. Both my box series of paintings, as well as my pillow series, started with this basic question. These objects ask the viewer, what are you willing to accept as a painting?</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Painting Without Solvents</image:title>
<image:caption>I’ve been painting long enough, that I sometimes forget that I don’t paint in a traditional way. I am a classically trained oil painter, with an MFA in painting, and I learned all the traditional painting techniques. Somewhere along the way, I started to experiment with different ways of doing things… and then things got weird, but I’ve been doing weird long enough I forget that most people don’t paint this way. About two semesters into my undergrad, I started researching the health effects of solvents, as well as the problems with disposing of used solvents. My conclusion from both a safety and health aspect was that I didn’t want to use solvents. This started a quest to figure out how to use oil paints without solvents. This quest to be solvent-free has had such an impact on the development of my painting style. I would not have predicted it when I started the quest. So how do you paint without solvents? One option would be to paint with acrylics, but that didn’t work for me. I’ll be covering some of my medium choices at a later date. I’ve tried oil paint sticks and still use them often. This method works for writing, and small areas, but would be impractical and frustrating for large areas on large paintings. I’ve tried more natural brush cleaners, but those end up producing odors almost as bad as solvents. I’ve used rags and paper towels for brush cleaning between colors, and baby oil for cleaning at the end but found this to be wasteful and impractical. After trial and error, and much experimentation, I found a process that works for me. The answer is that I don’t use brushes almost at all, and I don’t use solvents for thinning paint. I use my hands or palette knives to paint. I sometimes joke that I finger paint, but it does end up a bit more complicated than that! I’ll be writing a future post to go more in-depth as to how this works. Stay tuned…</image:caption>

      <image:title>About Elizabeth - About Elizabeth</image:title>
<image:caption>Elizabeth Wold creates abstract objects inspired by rust, decay, graffiti, and abandoned things. Exploring the potential of processes and mediums, the paintings are grown from accretion, time, and experiences. Creating chaos, and slowly bringing it back to find a balance between chaos, serendipity, and serenity. Beth works with non-representational abstraction, though the work still references distressed and decayed elements of the outside world. Elizabeth lives in the upper midwest of the United States. Her work is in public and private collections. She earned an MFA from the University of North Dakota in 2021. Her bachelor’s degree is in photography.</image:caption>
